Description
Small-batch Texas strawberry jam fills layers of crisp puff pastry in this lovely dessert kit. Easy and fun to prepare, this eye-catching heart-shaped design will bring joy to both adults and children alike. Serves 6-8. (Vegan, Dairy Free, Nut Free)Includes:
- 16 oz (2 sheets) Puff Pastry Sheets
- 8 oz Seasonal Texas Strawberry Jam
- 1 Egg (optional)
- Demerara Sugar (optional)
- Powdered Sugar (optional)
Hands on Time: 15 minutes; Total Time: 30 minutes
INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1 Thaw puff pastry the evening prior or set on the counter for 1 hour before preparing. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
STEP 2 Unfold each puff pastry sheet and flatten slightly with a rolling pin or wine bottle to smooth the creases. Cut a 10-inch wide heart shape from parchment paper and use it as a guide for cuting each pastry sheet into approximate 10-inch hearts. (Save the cut scraps, if desired, to bake off as a chef's treat.)
STEP 3 Place one pastry heart on the center of the parchment lined baking sheet. Spread about 3 tbsp. of strawberry jam in a thin even layer, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Place the second puff pastry over top; press the border gently to seal.
STEP 4 Mark the center of the heart with the point of a knife to show where not to cut. Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut each half of the heart into 9-10 strips for 18-20 strips total. Be sure to leave about 1-inch of uncut dough in the center.
STEP 5 Working with 1 piece at a time, and being careful to not detach the pieces from the center, twist each piece three times. Start twisting from the smaller end near the center and move downward. Repeat with all strips, then press the ends flat so they overlap, restructuring and keeping the shape of the heart. If desired, brush lightly with an egg wash and sprinkle with demerara sugar.
STEP 6 Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Remove from oven and let cool for 20 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
Enjoy!
